GUEST SPEAKER
COL lESLIE CARTER
Leslie D. Carter, Jr.
Colonel, US Army, Retired
Les Carter was born into an army family in 1926 in Chattanooga, TN, when his father was serving with the 6th Cavalry Regimen, stationed at nearby FT. Oglethorpe, GA. He grew up on army posts throughout the US, the Philippines and the Panama Canal Zone. He graduated from West Point in 1948.
He was commissioned in the infantry and after completing the basic officer course at FT. Benning, GA., he was assigned to the 350th Infantry Regiment in Austria, in 1942. He returned to FT. Benning, where he completed the Infantry Advanced Course and the Basic Airborne Course. (Qualification at that time used the C-46 aircraft and the T-7 parachute) He was then assigned to the 508th Airborne Regimental Combat Team. During the remainder of his career his troop assignments were with various airborne unit. In these assignments he earned the rating of Master Parachutist.
In 1956, he was assigned to the Military Assistance and Advisory Group (MAAG), in Vietnam, one of the early officers to serve in that country. During the first half of his tour he was an advisor to the Vietnamese Military Academy at DaLat. The second half of his tour he was the sole advisor to an infantry regiment at Pleiku.
Upon returning to the US in 1957, he was assigned to FT. Bragg, NC, where he served in the 82nd Airborne Division and later in the XVIII Airborne Corps, where he commanded the Corps Headquarters Company for three years. Following these two assignments, he completed the Command and General Staff College at FT. Leavenworth, KS., before moving to the Army's Pacific Headquarters in 1960. In 1964, he attended Tulane University, where he earned a Master's Degree in 1965 and joined the Department of the Army Staff in the Pentagon. A year later, he began a yearlong special assignment writing a study for the Army Chief of Staff.
On completion of that task, he returned to Vietnam and was assigned as Commander of the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, with the mission to clear enemy forces from Quang Dien district, his units area of operation. Because of the valor, dedication and professional skill of the men of the battalion, that mission was carried out with great success. (A partial basis for this statement is a letter written by a senior North Vietnamese official, stating that he could not attend a scheduled meeting because it was not possible to move through the district because of the tight control by the 1/502. He lamented that most of his senior lieutenants had been killed and he provided their names. His concern was validated when, trying to move at night, he was killed in a D/1/502, ambush and his letter fell into US hands).
Returning to the US in 1969, Les as assigned to the Combat Developments Command at FT. Belvoir, VA. and the following year he attended the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, PA. In 1971, he assumed command of a basic training brigade at FT. Jackson, SC. He next joined the Headquarters of Forces Command at FT. McPherson, GA., as the Director of Training, responsible for staff supervision of training of all Army Active, Army Reserve and National Guard units. His final assignment was to Readiness Command at MacDill Air Force Base, where he was Director of Combined Training for that command.
COL Carter retired in 1978, grateful for the many opportunities he received throughout his career and for the privilege of serving with so many outstanding mission oriented comrades who surrounded him. He enjoyed every day of his military service.
